OUR TEAM

JENNIFER JENKINS, BA, LL.B

Jennifer, together with Thomas A. Newman Q.C., established the law firm of Jenkins & Newman, now called Jenkins, Newman & Shipley Law.

Jennifer received an Honours B.A. from the University of Toronto in 1978 and L.L.B. in 1981 from the University of Western Ontario. Jennifer was called to the Ontario Bar in 1983. She has practiced exclusively in the area of Wills and Estates, including Estate Litigation since 1985.  Jennifer now acts as counsel to the firm’s lawyers.

Over the years Jennifer was a frequent guest speaker and contributor for the Canadia Bar Association and the Law Society of Ontario on matters related to Wills and Estates. She was an instructor at the Bar Admission Course for new lawyers and an instructor at Durham College in the law clerks course on Estate law. She also acted for the Office of the Children’s Lawyer in connection with her area of expertise; contributed papers to the Canadian Bar Association; the Canadian Association of Charitable Gift Planners; the National Society of Fund Raising Executives and the Law Society of Ontario.

Jennifer and her late husband, Mark Scott, authored the legal text, “Compensation and Duties of Estate Trustees, Guardians and Attorneys”, published by Thomson Reuters. The text continues to be published and updated as a loose-leaf service.

Jennifer is also a past member of the Estates and Trusts Section, Ontario Division, and a past member of the Practice Review Program Professional Standards Department of the Law Society of Ontario. She is also a past member of the Board of Directors of the Alzheimer Society of Canada, the Alzheimer Association of Ontario and the Alzheimer Society of Durham.

Jennifer also spent untold hours as a public speaker, offering information to members of the public about Wills and Estates.  Jennifer felt a very strong obligation to empower people with information and knowledge in the hope that they would be able to avoid some of the problems she saw every day in her practice, such as when a Will was not properly drawn or indeed there was no Will at all.
